Cherai Beach has always held a special place in my heart. It is the one beach that has always been dear to me… And I can remember myself as a kid walking barefoot in the sand with the whistling wind blowing on my hair as it swings playfully. Those were moments of pure bliss, fun and carefree life. Those were the days when Cherai was less known for its tourist attraction. The mesmerizing clear waters, the pure sand and its exotic view soon brought development to the land to preserve its beauty. Resorts soon opened up nearby welcoming the foreigners to the scenery.
Now, Cherai beach has opened its doors to the entire world & it’s cherished by all who have been here. For me, it is a part of my life. The last time I went there was last month (end of December 2007) – amidst the tourism festival.
Earlier Cherai was connected to Kochi through Ferry boats. But now the magnificent 3 bridges connecting the Vypin island to Kochi makes the 30km travel from Kochi faster. From the heart of Cherai, narrow roads skirted by the calm waters leads us to the beach. The Chinese fishing nets can be seen at the distance. The green trees stoop into the light green water bringing forth a look of enchantment that lures you ahead.
When we reached the shores, the roads became more and more decorated. The decorated elephants and people wearing theyyam costumes welcomed us to enjoy the mystic waters.
There were kites dancing in the clear sky. It was buzzing with numerous vendors selling all kinds of kites. Our nostrils were trickled by the vendors baking corn. Here I had my first experience in kite flying. After kite floated up into the sky, it was surely talent and knowledge on when to pull the thread and when not to, that maintains its perfect balance in the sky.
As we waited for the sunset, we took a leisurely stroll on the beach, wetting our feet in the waters. A time to reflect on the past, a time to talk of the present, a time to think for the future… are all the feelings that come to you while we walk on the shore. The safe waters invited us for a dip in the cool waters.
The enchanting sand grips us into it, making us want to visit it again and again.

Hello foxPfox,
I feel all beaches are unique.. each having its own essence. I feel Cherai beach is more about quiteness and relaxation. Fort Kochi beach is more for the chinese fishing nets and the fresh fishes and tapiocca.. etc
